Originally and often stitched into Pashmina Scarfs, the paisley pattern was recognized as a status symbol, and worn only by royalty since at least the 3rd century BC in the Indus region. These scarfs traveled through the Silk Road and eventually into western civilization.

"Paisley" - The Scottish town whose name has become synonymous with the ancient Persian pattern. The name Paisley means “church” in Irish Baslec. While some point to Paisley’s mass production of the formerly bespoke, artistically crafted pattern as a death of the art form and a devaluing of a once sacred icon used to symbolize status and wealth, the global proliferation it allowed gave resilient cultures around the world the access to reinvent the symbol. Through this globalization Paisley became a symbol for any and all cultures to express freedom, togetherness, and self expression.
